5 Effective Ways to Motivate Your Team

by | Oct 24, 2017 | BCS Management, Project Management

BCS Management was founded on the provision of project management and executive management support services.  We quickly adapt to organizations, identify and eliminate their weaknesses, and get them on the road to growth and success.

During the process of revamping organizations, there are times when we feel we have way too much to do and not enough time to do it.  Don’t we all feel this way at times?

Below are 5 Effective Ways to Motivate Your Team that have worked for us (internally) and for our clients.

1. Walk the Walk.

Motivate Team

Set the example by getting your own ducks in a row before jumping on your team’s ducks. Your team is watching you 24/7 (creepy, right?) so show them that you are not only a leader, but also a member of the team.  Get your hands dirty and your team will respect you and work harder for you.

2. Set Reachable Goals.

Motivation for workSet a balance of both long-term and short-term goals that are realistic and obtainable. Setting goals that your team sees as impossible will plummet productivity because they will not be motivated to work hard.  Share goals to get feedback on how your team will reach them and help team members see the “big picture”.

3. Provide Feedback from the Start.

Sensitive Sally is not going to respond well if she only receives negative feedback or when something goes wrong.  Expectations need to be set from the beginning with feedback given and received throughout the entire project.  Openly and regularly communicating with your team about priorities and time management will push team members to meet deadlines.  One skill you CANNOT expect your team to possess is the ability to read your mind.

4. Give Some Autonomy.

Work MotivateAllow your team members to telecommute every now and then: work from home or a nearby coffee shop.  A change of scenery can spark motivation and sometimes working from home in your PJs on a snowy day just makes sense. Studies have shown that some employees are often more productive when working from home because they are more relaxed.  Also, allowing your team members to choose when they take breaks will benefit productivity as long as those priorities are clear.

5. Technology is Your Friend.

Take advantage of the latest project and task management software.  At BCS, we use Asana which is a cloud-based tool designed for marketing and engineering projects.  The tool is comprehensive and enables organizations of any size to manage projects, communication, and collaborate- all in one place.  Asana has helped us meet deadlines and communicate efficiently.

We regularly provide internal Project Management training sessions for our team that in turn add value to the work we do for our clients.  At BCS, we maintain a healthy balance of caring about people and the bottom line at the same time. And we do this for clients every day while still completing projects on time, on budget, and as scheduled.  We are here for each other and we are here for our clients.
